The following letter is from my friend and patriot, Major (retired) Andy Messing. As a special forces leader, he has been part of numerous conflicts around the world, and after retirement, headed up the National Defense Council Foundation. He also served as advisor to several presidents, and now Andy is deeply involved in humanitarian aid around the world, often flying a plane into devastated or war-torn areas with medical supplies. He recently flew into Haiti, taking supplies and medicines, and here is communication he had with Bill O'Reilly with an observation he made regarding the US flag:
Dear Bill.....
First, I was a regular commentator on FOX News discussing Defense and Foreign Affairs issues until about 2007 when I retired from my Foundation ( the National Defense Council Foundation ).
Second, I have been to Haiti 9 times and just got back yesterday ( having done 8 medical missions there since early 1990's ).
Third, I have written about Haiti in the Op-Ed section of the Washington Times several times.... mentioning that the Red Chinese had over 350 "riot control " types in Haiti as part of the U.N. Force for YEARS !
Fourth, because you mentioned that American Forces have had to take down American Flags flying over their compounds because of phony political requirements by this Administration, I went and photographed the Red Chinese compound with their flag flying ...just a mile away from one of our compounds, sans flags, in Port-Au-Prince ( only the U.S.Embassy is flying our colors )...
Fifth... I have been in three conflicts in uniform... and covered the rest that had American Forces from Bosnia to Somalia...and even Iraq... been to 27 conflicts all total...was in El Salvador too... and met you in the Camino Real Bar with Bruce Hazlewood ( the senior Special Forces Advisor at the time )..... I have NEVER known of our soldiers being told to not display the American Flag above their positions ...NEVER !
I have seen our Flag flying proudly with burnt bullet holes in her... on many occasions... everywhere in the world where we fought or helped freedom and mankind.....
Accordingly, I am disgusted at the disrespect to American Military Forces on this important humanitarian mission....
